A GROUP of discontented Lesotho Amateur Athletics Association (LAAA) affiliates has taken its own association to the sports tribunal challenging a resolution made at the special meeting held in September that gave the October elections the green light to go ahead.

LAAA Public Relations Officer Sejanamane Maphathe has confirmed that the three districts of Berea, Maseru and Mafeteng have written to the association opposing preparations for the polls.

The three, Maphathe said felt that some of the clauses of LAAA’s constitution were not fully adhered to.
''The constitution says the nomination forms ought to be released six months prior to the date of the elections which should be filled with the names of candidates and positions they would like to stand for and be returned within three months for verification,'' he explained.
He said despite the concerns raised by the disgruntled parties, the LAAA’s National Executive Committee feels that all due processes were followed.

“We are waiting for the tribunal to pronounce itself on this matter,” he showed, adding that preparations were already at an advanced stage for holding the elections scheduled for Saturday.

He said unlike in the past when NEC members were eligible to cast their votes at the elective conference, under the new constitution, they are barred from doing so.

''Only districts delegates consisting of the President and the Secretary General are eligible to vote at the next elections as per the new constitution,” Maphathe further explained.
The associations elects a new NEC after every four years but due to the lockdown caused by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, sporting activities including the now contested elections were suspended in a bid to curb the spread of the deadly disease.

Restrictions were only eased last month which allowed individual sporting activities as well as outdoor sports to resume.
