MASERU – The Federation of Athletics Lesotho (FALE) has joined other sporting federations by calling on its members to be careful in the wake of the deadly Coronavirus.

The body formerly known as Lesotho Amateur Athletics Association (LAAA) says the government has issued a statement suspending all international trips and FALE also has to adhere to the directive.

FALE public relations officer Sejanamane Maphathe said: “We have to obey the call by the government and not take any international trips until further notice.”

He said they will take all the necessary steps to ensure that members of their association are safe from the pandemic.

He said he was not surprised that South Africa has already cancelled the Two Oceans marathon which was due in April.

“The race attracts several athletes from all around the globe, so holding it under the circumstances would definitely be risky,” Maphathe said.

In its official statement, the Two Oceans Marathon (TOM) board members and TOM 2020 organisers said they realise that it is impossible to guarantee runner safety at the events in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With that being the primary concern it would be irresponsible to expose runners to any risk of infection and therefore the 2020 Two Oceans Marathon and all its associated events will be cancelled.
The Two Oceans marathon 2020 was scheduled to take place on April 11 during Easter Holidays and it runs in Cape Town between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
