Likuena’s management is disappointed at the team’s failure to reach the final of the COSAFA Cup over the weekend. The team finished fourth at the regional tournament that was held in Durban, South Africa after Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Head of Likuena delegation, Rantsubise Matete said failing to reach the final was a major setback to the team. “The players tried their best but things did not go according to plan and we are obviously disappointed because of that,” he said. Matete could, however, not be drawn to explain what actually went wrong.

He said the technical team which, was spearheaded by deputy coach Mpitsa Marai in the absence of head coach Moses Maliehe, had been mandated to reach the final of the competition. The technical team, he further showed is yet to submit a report of the tournament, which will include recommendations going forward. In their opening game of the tournament last week Saturday, Likuena walloped the Cranes of Uganda 3-2 on penalty shoot-out after a goalless draw in regulation time in the quarter-finals.
Likuena received M125 000, third placed Zimbabwe pocketed M150 000, runners-up Zebra got M250 000 while winners, Chipolopolo of Zambia went home M500 000 richer. Hosts, South Africa's Bafana Bafana obtained R100 000 for the fifth position after winning the Plate Cup final on penalties against Malawi's Flames. The COSAFA Cup is an annual regional soccer tournament contested by member countries. One country is invited from outside the region. Other countries like Madagascar, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Uganda used the tournament as part of their preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for Egypt from June 21 to July 7.
