MASERU - Reigning Econet Premier League champions, Matlama yesterday went down 2 - 0 against Angolan side Atletico Petroleos de Luanda in the first leg of the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League at Setsoto Stadium. The visitors intentions were clear early on as they scored their first goal within the first 10 minutes of the game from the set piece just outside the box.

The early goal unsettled Matlama because they retreated into their goal posts to try and keep their opponents at bay. But their defence once again crumbled towards the end of the first half and the visitors netted their second goal. Matlama made a few attempts at the Angolans’ goals but the visitors’ keeper Delgato Elbar was too careful for any mistakes.

The second half did not produce any fruits for either team as the final score remained 2 -0. In a post-match interview, Matlama’s newly appointed coach Charles Mamba said they knew the Angolans would come at them strongly, especially at the beginning of the match.

“During the break I had a pep talk with the players, hence they played better in the second stanza,” Mamba said.  Given enough time, he promised to form a formidable team out of Matlama. “The CAF Champions league draw caught us by surprise as I have only been in charge of the team for less than a month,” he said. The two teams will meet in Angola in the second leg of the round.
