Maseru- Since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has marked September as the tourism month, with the World Tourism Day (WTD) commemorated on the 27th September yearly.

Lesotho celebrated this day on Thursday  in Maseru at Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LDTC) premises. This is where the Lesotho Guider was introduced.  It is an application that was created by Basotho youth, Titan Tech and Business Solutions.  The mobile application which can be downloaded on Google Play, to enable tourists to access all the information regarding Lesotho’s tourism sector. The application also provides information about the nearest filling station, hospitals, banks as well as restaurant to mention the few.

Tlhohonolofatso Rasephei says it will collect reports on the number of visitors and compile database of where majority of guests come from or the most visited places of attraction. The Acting Minister of Tourism, Honourable Temeki T’solo said the celebrations underline the significance of tourism in economic development. He noted that UNWTO emphasizes the importance of tourism and technology providing opportunities for innovation and creating jobs for the future.

Lesotho seeks to promote sustainable development through different initiatives including improvement of Lesotho’s tourism brand image, and digital marketing such as optimizing social media tourism websites. The objective during tourism month is said to promote tourism to all Basotho, regardless of their gender, race or any other status. During tourism month, the focus is on local tourism to inspire all Basotho travel around the country under the catchphrase ‘visit our country first’, ‘visit Lesotho first.’

Honourable minister appealed to Basotho to learn, explore and appreciate the magnificent mountain scenery, landscapes, museum dinosaur footprints and national parks in Lesotho. The Principal Secretary of tourism, Monaphathi Maraka said it’s not only the responsibility of the ministry to take care of tourism sector, but also for LDTC, for the betterment of tourism industry.  According to him, tourists need security from the police; therefore police should improve their security service so that tourists feel comfortable whenever they are in Lesotho.
