MAPUTSOE – Property estimated at about hundreds of thousands of maloti was destroyed when a Chinese-owned grocery store - Fly Enterprise was burnt to the ground on Monday night.

Attempts by the Maseru Metro to establish the cause of the fire were unsuccessful as both the owners of the business and the police spokesperson Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli could not be reached on their phones. But reports by eyewitnesses show that nothing was salvaged from the conflagration that reportedly lasted a hours before it was finally extinguished by police. An empty shell now stands where the once massive supermarket that used to serve hundreds of shoppers from Maputsoe and the neighbouring settlements was.

“Sometimes a night watchman used to guard the business, but on the night of the big fire, I have no idea if there was anyone around. It was a new grocery store with a lot of customers because it was sparkling clean and customers were just crazy about the business,” said Motlalepula Khomane, a guard who works at an adjacent store. The Metro is yet to establish the source of the fire, the extent of the damage and the number of employees who lost their jobs when the business went up in flames.
