… resigns as police minister and member of parliament The Minister of Police and Public Safety, 'Mampho Mokhele has resigned from her ministerial position and as member of the Senate. This was confirmed by the Press Attache in Prime Minister's Office, Thabo Thakalekoala on Friday confirming that Mokhele resigned from both positions on Tuesday this week and her portfolio shall be held in the meantime by Minister of Defence and National Security Tefo Mapesela until the find permanent replacement. He indicated that the resignation comes after the former Minister has been chosen to be Counsellor of Lesotho in Dublin Ireland “and this is purely just another assignment given to Mokhele by the government.” He added that the government found it fitting to send a person of her calibre to Ireland to campaign for national reforms especially on issues related to security reforms. “She has capability, potential as well as experience in security issues after her long time serving as police officer,” he said. He explained: “She is also going to drum up support of Ireland and other European countries for Lesotho to have a buy in in to the ongoing reforms.” Our efforts to speak to former Minister were futile as she requested to be called after 30 minutes but then her phone was unavailable. Mokhele was sworn in as the Senator in the 10th Parliament as well as Minister in July 2017 and she was among the eight women cabinet ministers in the third coalition government since 2012 general parliamentary elections. Currently, there are only four women cabinet ministers following former Forestry, Range and Soil Conservation Minister, 'Mamotsie Motsie's resignation in August last year and former Minister of Social Development 'Matebatso Doti being booted out in February this year and Deputy Minister of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation Rethabile Marumo-Mokaeane in March. Mokhele’s redeployment comes after a staunch member of the ruling All Basotho Convention (ABC)and famo musician Mosotho Chakela threatendd to “spill the beans” on why a woman police minister was appointed and still remained in the position. This Chakela said while also threatening to reprimand the First Lady, claiming “I am being looked down upon and will have to speak out.” He was talking to Bokamoso radio station where the presenter asked him to cool down.Lena and Metro Reporters
