A 23-man squad will produce the national soccer team lineup that will lock horns with Bafana Bafana in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) match to be played at Setsoto Stadium on July 28. “We are going to put together a team of very young players so that they can get experience and exposure to participate in international games,” said the assistant national coach Mpitsa Marai.

Marai said the Likuena technical team was going to start with intensive training for the competition with effect from June 24. He said if Likuena started training well on time with the best 23 players from various premier League teams, they might produce good results. He explained: “We are going to make sure that the players are given enough time to play in order to gain the necessary experience and confidence that will improve their performance.”

Asked if there would be any incentives or rewards if the players perform well, Marai said he had no clue yet as such matters are usually arranged by the footballing body. He appealed to Basotho who follow the national squad to be patient as they are building a team with new players devoid of experience in international exposure. Likuena will play the first leg at home while the second leg will be played in South Africa at a venue to be known later on August 3.

“I invite Basotho to come to Setsoto Stadium in large numbers to give their national squad moral support and cheer them up in order to motivate them to score goals. Players normally raise their tempo when they receive support from the crowd and their performance automatically improves,” Marai said. Although Likuena failed to reach the final in the recently played Confederation of Southern African Football Association (COSAFA) Cup in South Africa, the side was hailed for a good performance. Likuena appeared on third position after they were knocked out by Zimbabwe on penalty kicks of 5-4 after a 2-all draw in regulation time.
