MASERU - Thousands of Basotho living in rural and semi-urban areas will have improved access to reliable and affordable electricity as a result of over M590 million ($40 million) in new financing from the World Bank's International Development Association (IDA).

The project will also receive additional funds worth over M170 million ($12.9 million) from the Scaling Up Renewable Energy Programme (SREP) for the country’s energy sector.

According to the World Bank communication specialist Elita Banda, the Lesotho Renewable Energy and Energy Access Project which largely targets people living in remote areas, aims to expand access to electricity to diverse consumers with varied needs.

The recipients will include households, rural communities and those living on the outskirts of urban areas, small and medium enterprises and economic centers that are on or off the grid.
