MASERU – Youth league president of the Democratic Congress (DC) Moeketsi Shale on Tuesday took a shot at members of the new National Executive Committee of the ruling All Basotho Convention (ABC), accusing them of failing to bring the party to order.

Speaking on a local radio station during a morning programme on politics, Mr Shale said the faction led by party leader Thomas Thabane was a disappointing lot. He said the faction whose new NEC was announced on Monday was only interested in testing its power. “Instead of reunifying the party’s rival factions, it opted to replace the NEC members who still consider themselves as the rightful NEC.”

Mr Shale said: “NEC members are elected not picked-pens and by so doing, they continue to dictate the system, thereby depressing further the troubled party because their decision to substitute the ousted members is not helping the situation in any way.”

The only solution he said to the problem was to allow the courts of law to declare the lawful NEC to run the party affairs, pending the court’s ruling.  On Monday the party released a circular notifying its members of substitutions made in regard to ‘unoccupied positions’ within the party NEC. The statement declares Dr Moeketsi Majoro of the Thetsane constituency as the party’s new deputy leader, Kemiso Mosenene of Moyeni is the new chairman. Sentše Rabale of Mashai is the new spokesperson and deputised by Joel Mohale of Mafeteng.

The statement bearing the signature of the party deputy secretary general Nkaku Kabi, further indicates that the position of secretary general will be filled in due course.

The ABC has not known peace since the February elective conference which ushered into the party’s NEC Professor Nqosa Mahao as the deputy leader. Montoeli Masoetsa was elected spokesperson, ’Matebatso Doti his deputy and Lebohang Hlaele the secretary general while Samuel Rapapa was elected the chairperson.

All five were later axed by Mr Thabane who was not happy with election results. A verdict to determine the rightful party NEC still pends in the court of law.For their part, fired members argue that Mr Thabane did not follow procedure, hence do not acknowledge his decision.

In one incident, the mud-slinging degenerated into a physical fight when members of the warring factions exchanged blows over the control of the party headquarters in Maseru.  “ABC is experiencing a natural political battle that cannot be solved,” Shale noted.
