MASERU – First Lady ’Maesaih Thabane who had been on the run since a warrant for her arrest was issued earlier in January surrendered herself at the police headquarters in Maseru on Tuesday.

’Maesaih was believed to have been holed somewhere in Ficksburg, in the Free State Province, South Africa after she allegedly skipped the country.

When she arrived at the police headquarters earlier on Tuesday, she was reportedly accompanied by the Minister of Water Samonyane Ntsekele and her lawyer Advocate Rethabile Setlojoane.

Although details into how she ended up handing herself over to the police still remain sketchy, police spokesperson Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli has however, confirmed that ’Maesaih is indeed in police custody.

Supt Mopeli could nonetheless not be drawn to comment further on the matter, saying the First Lady was expected to appear before court in due time.

“The First Lady will remain in police custody until such a time when she can be taken before court when her questioning has been completed,” he said.

A warrant for her arrest was issued after ’Maesaiah failed to report herself before the police for questioning in connection with the death of Prime Minister Motsoahae Thabane’s other wife, Lipolelo Thabane.

Lipolelo was shot dead by unknown gunmen in June 2017 - two days before her husband’s inauguration. The fatal shooting occurred at the gate of her Ha ’Masana residence on the outskirts of Maseru.
