MASERU – Lesotho is set to host between 300 and 350 participants in August this year who would put heads together on a theme of “Reformed Educational Assessment – A Renewed Agenda” at the 36th Annual Conference for the Association of Education Assessment in Africa (AEAA). This was revealed by the ECoL Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr. Litšabako Ntoi who indicated that the AEAA Committee, which was in the country in March, approved the Lesotho to host the event as it is ready. She said they managed to organise the presentations, entertainment as well as accommodation for the participants. Dr. Ntoi further noted that the event will be held in Maseru between August 6 and 10. She said: “At this platform, we will discuss curriculum, assessment and evaluation strategies that other countries use in their education systems to stay relevant in the 21st century.” Dr. Ntoi observed that the AEAA conference in Lesotho will be a perfect platform for sharing best practices and innovations regarding the assessment of the performance of learners with special needs. “The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) is going through some changes that include piloting the Subsidiary Advanced Level in selected high schools, as way of bridging the knowledge gap between secondary and tertiary education,” she explained. Dr. Ntoi said the ministry intended to introduce a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) qualification at the basic education level, aimed at enhancing access to quality education and also cultivate a rich base of technical and vocational skills. AEAA is a professional body comprising member organisations from about 35 countries across Africa. It also enjoys the participation of countries such as the United Kingdom, Netherlands, and some countries from the Caribbeans. ECoL is a non-profit making organisation responsible for conducting public examination and national assessment surveys on behalf of MoET. Lena
