MAFETENG – Opposition Democratic Congress (DC) leader, Mathibeli Mokhothu, last weekend continued his deafening salvo of attacks against the four-party coalition government of Prime Minister Thomas Thabane.

Speaking at an open-air rally of his party at the Thabana-Morena constituency in Mafeteng last Saturday, the former school teacher decried the two-facedness of the incumbent administration, which he said had derailed from all its pre-election promises to Basotho. Mokhothu said some of the leaders of the present government contributed to the demise of the previous DC-led regime because of their corrupt deeds, and “even in this present regime the same self-styled saviours of the electorate are still imbued with corruption”.

In a litany of alleged shady transactions by the Thabane-led administration, the DC leader claimed he was shocked a company was paid a whopping M3 million for landscaping service at Thabane’s official residence, he further claimed the construction of the Marakabei-Butha-Buthe road was allocated M700 million by parliament “but the same corrupt officials have added M200 million for personal gain”.

He said as Leader of Opposition he would fight this extra allocation in the National Assembly should government put the request for additional funds before the House, adding: “we will not approve such corruption”. It was sad that when teachers sit at home due to their unresolved concerns, the prime minister and his deputy could move to procure seven luxurious Lexus motor vehicles to the tune M12.6 million for themselves, Mokhothu said.

He charged that Lesotho faced massive corruption, poor service delivery and lack of patriotism under the present government.  He strongly appealed to the nation to vote for his party in the next elections, pledging the creation of jobs for the youth as well as purging the civil service of party leaning employment.  Speaking at the same public gathering constituency youth league spokesperson, Poloko Selohlanye, complained of non-existent infrastructure development and service delivery in Thabana-Morena.
