MASERU – Prime Minister Thomas Thabane left Lesotho on Friday to attend the 74th United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York, United States of America (USA).

According to the PM’s press attaché, Thabo Thakalekoala, Mr Thabane will join a total of 193 other leaders from countries that are members of the UN at the Summit. 

The intention of the assembly, Mr Thakalekoa said was for the member states to work together on the comprehensive collection of international issues covered by the Charter of the UN such as among others peace, security and development.

He said starting next week, the UN Secretary-General would convene a Climate Summit as climate change had become a concern affecting humans, animals and the environment negatively.

After the opening of the 74th general debate, he said, there would also be a meeting of the UN High-level Political forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). 

He said there would also be a dialogue on financing for development along with another high-level meeting on the elimination of nuclear weapons.

Mr Thakalekoala showed that during his brief stay in New York, the Premier would also meet both the Irish and Kenyan presidents in order to enhance relations for growth and development of Lesotho.

He said Mr Thabane would also deliver Lesotho’s National Statement on Thursday to the assembly while also briefing members on progress made in issues of reforms.
