Prime Minister Tom Thabane has intimated that thought of possible snap election because of infighting within the ruling party is wishful thinking as there are no national election until 2022. Speaking at his ruling All Basotho Convention (ABC) on Sunday April 28, Thabane rebuked allegations that there is a possibility of snap elections, saying: “There is no such thing and Lesotho will only go for elections scheduled for the year 2022 and those who have been feeding these lies to the nation have nothing but the intention of causing confusion.” He added that instability that is seen inside his party does not have any kind of bearing to the stability of ‘Four by Four’ coalition government which he insisted is still intact and not under any threat. The ABC is leading a four party coalition after 2017 national election composed of Alliance of Democracy (DC) led by deputy prime minister Monyane Moleleki, Basotho National Party (BNP) led by Chief Thesele ‘Maseribane and Reformed of Congress of Lesotho (RCL) led by Ms Keketso Rantso. He allayed fears of his party enthusiasts by assuring them of a complete stability of the government but acknowledged that there is a rift in the party whose solution he said will come from the party leadership. “The conflict that you have heard about that is ongoing inside the ABC should not bother you but instead be left to the leadership which is working hard to address it,” he said. Meanwhile, some opposition parties such as the Democratic Congress (DC) have been calling to its followers and the nation to prepare for possible elections. Its leader and leader of opposition in parliament, Mathibeli Mokhothu was quoted saying the DC will be government and he will be Prime Minister (PM) this year, while the party’s Public Relations Officer Serialong Qoo has alleged that the country is going for snap elections in September this year. The ABC impasse came to the surface late last year when it’s Member of Parliament (MP) for Butha-Buthe, Motlohi Maliehe lashed the party leader openly during a political rally. Maliehe who was to contest for the position of deputy leader gathered a short-lived sympathy from the party supporters which he lost as soon as National University of Lesotho (NUL) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nqosa Mahao showed interest in the same position and Maliehe becoming clear that he was not on his side. Then came time for elections, February 1 and 2, when the scales changed towards Mahao who won a deputy leader seat, while the leader’s son-in-law, Lebohang Hlaele got that of Secretary General. The new national executive committee has since been denied access to the party office through a court order. Lena
