Healthy eating does not necessarily mean one will not eat the food they do not like. If you make sensible choices, you can continue to enjoy a wide range of foods. You should plan for a diet that’s rich in nutrients and low in fat and calories.

This is according to an assessment by made by food expert, Seanokeng Nkareng from the Green Life nutrition centre, based in Lesotho.
From her prospective, eating a poor quality diet high in junk food is linked to a higher risk of obesity, depression, digestive issues, heart diseases, and stroke; type 2 diabetes, cancer, and early death.
"Pizza is one of the world’s most popular junk foods. Most commercial pizzas are made with unhealthy ingredients, including highly refined dough and heavily processed meats. Pizza also tends to be extremely high in calories.
"However, some restaurants offer healthier ingredients. Homemade pizzas can also be very healthy, as long as you choose wholesome ingredients," she says.
Frying, grilling, and broiling she adds are among the unhealthiest cooking methods because foods cooked in these ways are often highly palatable and calorie-dense.

Several types of unhealthy chemical compounds also form when food is cooked under high heat.
Many chemicals formed during high-heat cooking, Nkareng says have been linked to an increased risk of cancer and heart diseases.
Potatoes, she says are best consumed boiled, not fried and to improve one’s health, she suggests it is best to choose milder and healthier cooking methods, such as boiling, stewing, blanching, and steaming.
On other types of junk food, she says most cookies and cakes are unhealthy if eaten in excess because packaged versions are generally made with refined sugar, refined wheat flour and added fats.

“Shortening, which may be high in unhealthy trans fats, is sometimes added; these treats might be tasty, but they have almost no essential nutrients, copious calories, and many preservatives,” she also notes.

She adds: "If you can’t stay away from dessert, fresh fruit, or dark chocolate, choose foods that are naturally gluten-free, such as unprocessed plant. There are some foods and cooking methods that are generally unhealthy — although most people can eat the food in moderation on special occasions without any permanent damage to their health.
"This means, your meals should contain lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and moderate amounts of meat and dairy products. This is not a diabetes diet per se; it is actually the best eating plan for everyone. Essentially, if your goal is to control your blood sugar (glucose) level and manage your weight.
Very little is known about street food and fast food consumption patterns in Lesotho despite this being a large sector of the national economy in terms of employment provided and sales of food.

However, most junk food is found there. Nevertheless, from Nkareng's point of view, scores of people buy food from street vendors and fast food outlets frequently. Fast foods are easy and fast to prepare but most lack essential nutrients.
Nkareng says the working class and frequent travellers are the most frequent consumers of street food with nearly one out of five consuming such foods at least twice a week. The highest consumption of street food takes place in urban informal and urban formal areas.
"The survey on street food and fast food consumption identifies this business sector as a potential area for health and nutrition education," she adds.
