LESOTHO will host the 2021 AUSC Region 5 Games inclusive of the Men Under-17 and the Women Under-20 Championships scheduled for December, the Confederation of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) has confirmed.

This decision was arrived at during the congress’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Johannesburg, South Africa on Sunday.

The Lesotho Football Association (LeFA) Media Officer Mikia Kalati told Metro that Lesotho was represented by two people at the AGM.

“Due to COVID-19 restrictions, COSAFA earlier resolved that each member association be represented by two members with one member travelling to South Africa for physical attendance with the other member attending the meeting virtually.

“In our case, Lesotho was physically represented by LeFA Secretary General Mokhosi Mohapi while the president, King’s Counsel Salemane Phafane attended virtually,” he said.

The congress agenda items comprised the 2020 financial audited statements, the 2021 Budgets, the COSAFA amendments with corrections, the COSAFA electoral code as well as the presentations by CAF elections candidates inclusive of Dr Patrice Motsepe for presidential position from COSAFA region.

COSAFA held a fruitful AGM where the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) president Gianni Infantino was a special guest to congratulate member associations on the astonishing growth of the game in the region in the last few years.

Other invited guests included South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa.

President of the South African Football Association (SAFA) Dr Danny Jordaan welcomed the participants.

COSAFA has also created a new Ethics Board that will act in line with FIFA and CAF statutes, while crucially the executive committee will henceforth include at least one woman.

Members also adopted financial reports from the last fiscal year, as well as a budget for 2021.

COSAFA has set out a calendar to host as many as 10 tournaments which will include the addition of a Women’s Club Champions League, an exciting new chapter in COSAFA’s history.

COSAFA president Dr Phillip Chiyangwa said COVID-19 has ravaged the beautiful game, preventing many players from being active.

“As such we have strategised and we have not failed, in 2020 we held four consecutive tournaments over a span of six weeks, thanks to Dr Jordaan.

“I must also applaud Minister Mthethwa, for his support of our tournaments in Nelson Mandela Bay at the end of last year,” Dr Chiyangwa noted.
