Morocco advance to R16 after penalty shootout win over Netherlands

Morocco booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after a tense and dramatic penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands at Monterrey Stadium, on a night that carried deep emotion for Dutch forward Cody Gakpo. Gakpo had opened the scoring just two days after revealing the loss of his unborn son, but Morocco showed resilience to fight back, force extra time, and ultimately win on penalties.

The Netherlands began strongly and enjoyed much of the early possession, but Morocco created the clearest chance of the opening stages. After 20 minutes, Neil El Aynaoui met Achraf Hakimi’s corner with a header that required Bart Verbruggen to make an excellent reaction save. Morocco continued to threaten before half-time, and in added time Ismael Saibari came close to reaching another dangerous Hakimi delivery at the far post.

Hakimi remained one of Morocco’s biggest attacking threats after the break. The captain burst down the right wing and struck the upright early in the second half, nearly giving his side the lead. Moments later, he carved out another promising opening, only for Micky van de Ven to sprint back and make a crucial recovery tackle to prevent a shot.

Seeking greater control, Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman introduced Teun Koopmeiners and Wout Weghorst. The changes helped shift the momentum, and the Dutch soon found the breakthrough. Weghorst won an aerial duel to set Crysencio Summerville free, and his pass released Gakpo, who finished emphatically past the advancing Yassine Bounou.

For a time, the Netherlands appeared set to see out the result. Morocco, however, refused to give in. Their persistence was rewarded when substitute Issa Diop rose highest to head in Chemsdine Talbi’s cross from the left and level the match, sending the tie into extra time and reviving Moroccan hopes.

The additional period produced more drama. Verbruggen made a remarkable point-blank save to deny Soufiane Rahimi as Morocco pushed for a winner in the closing stages. At the other end, Bounou stood firm to keep the Dutch attack at bay, ensuring the contest would be decided from the penalty spot.

The shootout brought further tension, with both teams missing twice. Bounou emerged as the decisive figure, saving Summerville’s effort to give Morocco the advantage. Saibari then stepped up and converted the winning penalty, sealing Morocco’s place in the next round and sparking celebrations on the pitch.

The result sets up a Round of 16 meeting with World Cup co-hosts Canada in Houston on 4 July. For Morocco, it was a memorable display of belief, discipline, and composure under pressure, while for the Netherlands it was a painful exit after a match they had controlled for long stretches.
