Lesotho’s NSDP woes continue

Lesotho has failed dismally to implement the development plans set under the National Strategic Development Plan (NSDP) since it first became operational in 2012 and the country has, despite notable failures, come up with the extended version that should be achieved by the end of the fiscal year 2027/28.

The big question is whether the country will be able to achieve the set economic goals under the extended version of the NSDP which seeks to transform Lesotho from a consumer-based economy to a producer-based economy, aiming to promote inclusive growth and create employment through the private sector to reduce poverty.

The first NSDP was implemented from 2012/13 to 2016/17, focusing on achieving sustained and broad-based economic growth as the most effective route for poverty reduction through private sector growth. The second NSDP was implemented from 2018/19 to 2022/23 and aimed to grow employment in the private sector that could be maintained beyond seasonal or informal activities.
