Government on trial: opposition accuses Matekane administration of trampling the constitution

The office of the Official leader of the Opposition, Mathibeli Mokhothu, has this week launched one of its most scathing attacks yet on Prime Minister Ntsokoane Matekane’s Revolution for Prosperity (RFP)-led Government, accusing it of a “calculated and systematic pattern” of defying binding court orders that, if left unchecked, threatens to collapse constitutional democracy in the Kingdom.

In a strongly worded press statement issued from Parliament and dated 20 July 2026, the Office of the Leader of the Opposition catalogued no fewer than six separate instances in which the courts of Lesotho – from the High Court to the apex Court of Appeal – have handed down binding judgments that the Executive has either ignored outright or actively frustrated through administrative directives.

The statement does not mince words. It describes the Government’s conduct as “not merely unlawful” but as “an open declaration that the Executive considers itself superior to the Constitution and the Judiciary.” It warns bluntly that Lesotho is on “a dangerous path that threatens the very existence of constitutional democracy” in the country.
