PRIME Minister Dr Moeketsi Majoro is scheduled to spearhead the launch of the Maluti Fresh Produce Market Centre at the Tikoe Industrial Area next week Thursday.

The market centre was developed by the Ministry of Trade and Industry through a grant from the International Trade Centre (ITC), under the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF) Project phase II.

Tiisetso Moremoholo, Public Relations Manager of Lesotho National Development Corporation (LNDC), the main parastatal of the Government of Lesotho that is charged with the implementation of the country’s industrial development policies says objective of the fresh produce market is to correct the structural deficiencies in the local fresh produce market.

She said the above as part of LNDC mandate will improve market access to aggregate vegetable production whilst enabling greater local participation in vegetable production and ultimately improve the economy.
Ms Moremoholo said it is envisaged that the centre will allow farmers to better market their fresh produce and receive prompt payment for their products.

Earlier, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Thabiso Molapo had shown that they expected to receive locally produced products such as tomatoes, potatoes, green peppers and other vegetables at the centre.
He said about 20 Basotho Market Agents have already been trained and are expected to identify local farmers countrywide in order to register them in a database so that they could supply the market with their produce.

Dr Molapo said the market is expected to create 50 jobs in the beginning with the intention of creating more employment opportunities in future. LeNA
