THE former Second Deputy Governor of the Central Bank (CBL), ’Mathabo Gail Makenete has been appointed the new Auditor General with effect from January 30.

Prior to Makenete’s appointment, ’Mafani Masoabi had been holding the fort as the acting Auditor General from July 2022.  

“His Majesty King Letsie III, pursuant to section 142 (1) of the Constitution of Lesotho, and acting in accordance with the advice of the Right Honourable Prime Minister, has appointed Ms ’Mathabo Gail Makenete as the Auditor General with effect from January 30, 2023,” the office of the Auditor General announced on Tuesday.

Makenete is a holder of a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) Accounting degree from the National University of Lesotho (NUL) in 1985.

She also obtained a certificate in Chartered Accountancy from the Centre for Accounting Studies (CAS) in 1992.

She worked for the CBL for a total of 31 years and 11 months.  

From 2012 – 2021, she held the executive position of the Second Deputy Governor of the CBL, where she was responsible for four departments in the bank.

Between June 2000 and December 2011, she was the bank’s Director of Financial Markets and was responsible for reserves management and domestic market operations.

She also served as the bank’s Head of Reserves Management from November 1991 to May 2000.

She was an Internal Auditor of the bank from February 1990 to November 1991.

From July 1985 to January 1990, she was a Senior Accountant in the Ministry of Employment and Labour.
