MASERU - Four Lesotho men who were arrested in Welkom, South Africa for illegal immigration and possession of an unlicensed firearm appeared before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court earlier today.

The suspects who were arrested on July 19 are aged 21, 23, 32 and 37. Before they made their appearance in court today, they had been detained at the Welkom police station. Captain Stephen Thakeng of the Free State Province Police said upon their arrest, the four failed to produce documents permitting them to stay in South Africa.

Captain Thakeng said police seized an unlicensed 9mm pistol and 23 rounds of ammunition from one of the men. “The 37-year-old suspect who was in possession of the gun did not have a firearm’s license,” he said, adding the men were arrested in Phomolong.
