MASERU – Scores of commuters living in villages around Maseru were on Tuesday morning forced to walk to town because local taxis failed to show up to transport them due to an ongoing stay-away initiated by the Maseru Region Taxi Operators (MRTO).

Members of the association complain about unregistered taxis, commonly known as pirates that operate within their routes, unfairly competing for passengers with them.

In Lithabaneng, Ha Matala the picketing taxing operators and drivers burned car tyres in the road, obstructing the flow of traffic.

Police armed with tear gas guns and water cannons however, quickly rushed to the scene and dowsed the fire to bring matters under control again.

The Minister of Transport Keketso Sello on Monday urged drivers to report for work the next day, a call most ignored.

A meeting in which Sello and other cabinet ministers met taxi operators on Monday resolved that the latters’ grievances would be dealt with urgently as they are legitimate.

The meeting is expected to continue on Tuesday until Wednesday.
