A male factory worker was on Friday night beaten to a pulp in Linakotseng, Ha Tsolo, Maseru by colleagues for allegedly going to work during the workers’ strike, Police Spokesperson Senior Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli has confirmed.

He said although no one has been arrested in connection with the incident, police are, however investing an assault case.

The man has since been admitted in hospital with bodily injuries, Mopeli also said.

He could however, not confirm allegations making rounds on social media platforms about other factory workers who reportedly attacked their colleagues and torched their properties in the same area (Ha Tsolo), for going to work during the industrial action that has lasted over two weeks.

Deputy General Secretary of the National Clothing Textile and Allied Workers Union (NACTWU), Tšepang Makakole said unions are not aware of any attacks made on factory workers by other workers.

“We have only heard about arguments between workers in areas like Ha Thetsane, Qoaling and Lekhaloaneng in the past few days, but there is actually nothing the unions can do to stop the squabbles.”
