MASERU – Local human rights lawyers (LLHR) want both the army commander and his police counterpart interdicted in respect of recent violations of citizens’ human rights by the members of the two state security organs during the COVID-19 lock-down period.

Members of LLHR have consequently written a letter to the president of the Law Society of Lesotho (LSL) proposing an urgent application to that effect.

One of LLHR members, King’s Counsel Zwelakhe Mda said they addressed the letter to LSL mindful of the fact that the body is a watchdog of the rule of law in Lesotho.

LLHR proposes that the said heads of enforcement agencies be ordered to round up all their members who participated in such crimes as actual perpetrators or partners in crime forthwith and present them before the courts of law.
“It will be in the interest of justice that these rogue soldiers and police be suspended from discharging their official duties pending the determination of their criminal cases,” reads the letter.

It adds: “It serves a good purpose to register the sentiment that all members of the legal fraternity and human rights formations within the fraternity, must hang our heads in shame for having allowed such a desperate situation to continue for a long time without anybody doing anything meaningful to try and stop it.”

The LLHR also urges members of the legal profession and the public at large to abide by the national lockdown regulations.
