LCA graft suspects freed on bail

TWO women who are charged together with the former chief executive officer of the Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) Tšeliso ’Mokela for corruption were on Tuesday granted free bail by the Maseru Magistrate’s Court.

’Majanki Fako and Mamofota Tlali are also charged along with with Lefa Mokotjo, Monate Thulo, Paseka Khetsi and Bokang Lethunya for the same crime.

’Mokela is also a former principal secretary of the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology.

Both Fako and Tlali were ordered to return to court on September 29 to secure a hearing date.

Mokotjo, Thulo, Khetsi and Lethunya along with ’Mokela appeared before the same court last week and were each also granted free bail.

It is alleged that for the year 2017/18, Fako and Tlali authorised payment of a performance bonus to ’Mokela at 50 per cent, which is above the 20 per cent maximum authorised threshold in the amount of M785 279.88.

It is alleged that the payment was made without assessing ’Mokela.

The accused further authorised payment of another performance bonus to 'Mokela amounting to M104 203.13 for the year 2016/17, the court papers show.

They are also alleged to have authorised an unlawful salary adjustment on behalf of 'Mokela by 8 per cent resulting in a loss of M449 039.81 on the part of government.
