MASERU – Lesotho and Kenya have agreed to establish a Joint Commission for Cooperation as well as sign three agreements geared towards boosting a bilateral cooperation .

One of the pacts, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for bilateral consultations on sports is aimed at developing both countries’ sport industries.

During the signature on Monday in Nairobi, Kenya, the Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyetta said the MoU on sports would provide an opportunity for the development of sports as an economic booster.

In particular, President Kenyatta said the sports pact would see the two countries enhance cooperation in training and the application of sports operations.

“I therefore urge our respective teams to work expeditiously to ensure that the negotiations are completed and that the framework is put in place,” he also said.

Prime Minister Dr Motsoahae Thabane has pledged that Lesotho will back Kenya’s bid for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.

Speaking to Metro newspaper following the signature, Lesotho Amateur Athletics Association (LAAA) spokesperson, Sejanamane Maphathe, said the mulled cooperation was long overdue, as a step bound to greatly impact on the country’s athletics sector.

“Kenya is one of the few countries in the continent that dominate long-distance running together with Ethiopia, and Uganda as emerging force, and to have the opportunity to share notes with them will do local athletics a great deal of help,” Maphathe said.

He commended the government for all efforts it took towards the advancement of sports in the country, especially “in assisting us in long-distance running where we are making a name for ourselves”.
