THE community of Mantsopa Local Municipality (MLM) in the Free State Province has been warned that due to the critically low water levels in the Caledon River, it (the municipality) is grappling to ensure that there is an uninterrupted provision of water supply in all its areas.

A statement released this week by the Municipal Manager Thamae Masejane, shows that given the prevailing circumstances, the Water and Sanitation Team has decided to augment the shortfall by extracting water from the Cathcart Dam, which is currently 100 percent full.

“Worth mentioning is that there is no rain anytime soon, the reserves we have will likely last us for two and half months before running dry

“Some areas might face intermittent water supply disruption as a result of the Caledon River drying up. The municipality will be intensifying the water restriction and the community is humbly requested to do everything in its power to conserve water so as to avoid taps running dry (DAY Zero),” the statement also says.

The municipality has further shown that some areas might experience brown water due to mineral sediments and or rust that accumulates over time.

“We have a programme of flashing out the system often; however, there will be some stubborn ones that will not come out immediately. Should the community experience anything untoward, we humbly request that they immediately contact our hotline on the following number – 0615056368,” Mr Masejane said in the statement.

The Caledon River or Mohokare is a tributary of the Orange River (Senqu), which is one of the largest rivers in southern Africa.

It rises in the Drakensberg Mountains, forming most of the boundary between Lesotho and the Free State Province in South Africa.

Maseru, the capital of Lesotho lies on the river. The Caledon leaves Lesotho near Wepener, Free State and flows through southeastern Free State to join the Orange River near Bethulie, before flowing into the Gariep Dam near the town of Norvaspont.

Its total length is about 480 kilometres and its valley experiences temperature swings.
