THE Ministry of Social Development has apologised to the management of local schools after it failed to pay bursaries for their learners on time.

According to the ministry’s Senior Information Education and Communication Officer, Mpho Makhetha, the ministry was unable to pay the fees on time because among others, the schools’ calendar changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
She said they also failed to meet the deadline because of the delay of registrations closure in ensuring that no learners were left behind.
Ms Makhetha said the Junior Certificate (JC) results were released recently, adding that this delayed payments as learners were expected to make applications for bursaries so that they could be included to those that were already made before the payments.
She said the ministry further made follow-ups in schools to ensure that learners who are already receiving assistance returned to school.

She said all these issues affected the ministry’s operations and delayed the overall payments of the bursaries.

The expectation, she said is that all payments will be completed by end of the month, apologising to schools for the inconvenience caused.

The Ministry of Social Development was established to among others, lead and facilitate the provision of sustainable social development services that are universally accessible to all groups in Lesotho in collaboration with other key stakeholders. LeNA
