Motion on debating Independence Day withdrawn
MP Tšepang Tšita-Mosena
Story highlights
The motion, which was proposed by MP Tšepang Tšita-Mosena, indicated that it was the ideal time to engage in Parliamentary debate marking 55 years of Lesotho’s independence.
The intention, she said was meant to introspect on the journey thus far in particular the challenges, successes, potential growth, opportunities and future prospects, paving the way for the Lesotho, Basotho want today and for future generation.
Withdrawing the motion, the Speaker of Parliament, Sephiri Motanyane said the commemoration of institutional days was determined by the House mentioning such days as 16 days of activism against gender based violence, Armistice and AIDS day amongst others as per standing order number 78 adding however that the Independence day was not stipulated.
He was keen to know if there was any wisdom in the motion, advising Mrs Tšita-Mosena to ask for the commemoration of the day in the House not the debate.
In response, Mrs Tšita-Mosena heeded the advice and agreed that the motion would be presented in that manner in future.

Among other issues that were also discussed included the virtual sitting of the house with some MPs proposing to attend the sittings physically not virtually because the number of people who attended physically decreased each day.
But the Speaker said he could not debate on the issue as the House still observed COVID-19 safety protocols thus the need to continue with both physical and virtual sittings.
The House was adjourned until next week Monday. LeNA
