MASERU – An intense debate between MPs on Tuesday almost degenerated into a fist fight as the legislators disagreed on how to bring into the House new regulations of wool and mohair as per the National Assembly’s resolution.

Some members in the opposition had wanted the new regulations to be formulated within seven days as per the House’s previous agreement.

They therefore demanded to know why the Minister of Small Business, Cooperatives and Marketing Chalane Phori had failed to play ball.

Addressing the discord, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Teboho Lehloenya showed that according to Standing Order No. 105, the minister had 30 days and not seven to formulate the regulations.
His response clearly did not sit well with the opposition members who burst into a provocative song that disrupted proceedings. Chaos broke out as other MPs from the ruling coalition government also joined in the singing to the chagrin of their compatriots in the 4x4 government.

The heated exchange that ensued could perhaps have turned into a bloody brawl had MP for Lithabaneng ’Matebatso Doti not valiantly stood between the belligerent men. Proceedings were consequently postponed until today.
