MASERU – Trade unions have planned to completely shut down textile firms on Tuesday when the workers who demand a salary hike go on a nationwide mass action.

The secretary general of the National Clothing Textile and Allied Workers Union (NACTWU) Sam Mokhele said they expect both textile workers and employees from the other private sectors to attend the match that begins at the Papal statue and ends at the Makoanyane Square.
Mokhele said although they expect their colleagues from Maputsoe and other districts to participate in the protest march, no transport arrangements have been made for the protesters.
The unions demand a wage increase of between 20percent to 17 percent for the textile workers and for employees in the other private sectors.

Mokhele said they are holding the mass action after negotiations between the unions and the employers collapsed.
The secretary general of the Lesotho Workers Association (LEWA) Hlalefang Seoaholimo also shared similar sentiments, saying they were ready to bring Maseru to a standstill.

The unions have also called upon the Minister of Employment and Labour Keketso Rantšo to step down, saying she failed to address their demands.

The wages Advisory Board notice which is mandated by section 50 (3) to publish in a Government a notice of intention to submit recommendations or proposals for a period not less than 30 days, shows that textile workers earning less than M2000 should get 5.5 percent while textile workers earning more than M2000 has been estimated at 5percent.
