MASERU – The source of a strange fire that burnt to the ground the American embassy warehouse in Florida, Maseru on Tuesday remains unknown, police and the embassy have said.

The building went up in flames between 3.30pm and 4pm with the fire taking about an hour or so before it was doused by the army’s fire brigade.

“There was no loss of life or injuries, for which we are grateful. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. We are still determining the extent of the damage and losses,” the embassy’s acting press and information officer Joshua Rodd told Metro.

Everything was destroyed in the fire, a security officer working for a neighbouring firm said.

The man who declined to be identified said none of the property that was housed in the building was saved as the entire building was eaten by the conflagration.

“The building housed furniture, machinery and many other things belonging to the embassy, only vehicles what were parked outside were saved,” he said.

Although the embassy could not be drawn to estimate the cost of damage, the property could probably be worth millions of maloti.

Similarly, Police spokesperson Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli said at this point, they are still investigating the cause of the fire.

An eye witness who was at the scene after the fire broke out said the fire brigade vehicle arrived way after the fire had burnt itself out.

“Whatever caused that fire also stopped it because it went out immediately after it had started, but everything was burnt to the ground,” the woman said
