IN a move to promote chess among women, the Monafils Institute for Chess Excellence (MICE) has announced its plan to offer free chess training for women who are interested in learning the sport.

Chess academy offers free training to female players

According to a statement released by the academy this week, potential female players are only expected to buy their own chess sets from the institution at the price of M180.
“Women players are only expected to buy chess sets from us and pay no fees as the aim is to promote women chess,” part of the statement reads.
It further shows that MICE’s experienced female senior trainer, Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Maboloko Leboela will facilitate the training.
In an interview with Metro, MICE senior trainer and founder Mphetole Mona said there are comparatively fewer female chess players than their male counterparts, adding that prompted the academy to focus its attention on women for a change.
“Also WCM Leboela is part of the Women in Chess Commission in Southern Africa (Zone 4.5) and is promoting women chess. On top of that, one of our aim as an institution is to promote women chess in Lesotho,” Mona also noted.

He added: “We can take as many trainees as possible and will only close when we believe we have reached the limit we can afford to manage.”
During this month, he said the academy will accept applications and offer study material along with online instructions so that everyone from all over the country can access the lessons offered.
“The plan is to start having physical trainings and tournaments in January so that the players can prepare themselves for competitions at national level,” he also said.
