MASERU - In preparation for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 games to be held in the country next year, Lesotho on Tuesday hosted the Council of Sports Ministers meeting in Maseru.

Officially opening the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Monyane Moleleki said Lesotho was honoured to be afforded the opportunity to host the games, which he said would leave a legacy for generations to come.
Dr Moleleki said infrastructure played a critical role on the games, adding that construction of the playing facilities was at an advanced stage following sod turning events in Lepereng and Roma.

He said Lesotho was currently reviewing its national policy on sports and recreation, adding that it was through that policy that sport would contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the country.
For her part, Minister of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation Dr Mahali Phamotse said in pursuit of attaining sustainable development on sports in the region, the Secretariat continued to explore various strategies that sports and recreation could implement the Region's Strategic Plan which focus on amongst others the Podium Performance Programme (PPP), regional marathon, sports awards, sports educational and training, coach development programme and Region 5 youth games.

Angolan Minister of Youth and Sport, Paula da Silva do Sacramento Neto said all member states were going through delicate and challenging economic experiences. She, however, said it was time to demonstrate resolute tenacity for the good of sport and future generations.
The meeting ends on Sunday and participation is drawn from nine countries which fall under the AUSC Region and they include Angola, Eswatini, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, South Africa, Botswana and Lesotho.
The AUSC Region 5 Youth Games are held every two years and the last games were staged in Botswana where Lesotho collected 11 medals.
