THE South African Football Association Referees’ Review Committee has suspended assistant referee Andile Mncwango for incorrectly disallowing Bloemfontein Celtic’s Motebang Sera’s goal in the recent match against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mncwango flagged Sera offside for what would have been a winning goal for the Lesotho striker as Celtic played to a goalless draw against the defending champions at the Lucas Moripe Stadium last week.

Sera is yet to find the back of the net for Phunya Sele Sele since the start of the 2020/2021 season.

The assistant referee has been banned for 16 weeks from officiating in South Africa’s two elite leagues, the Glad-Africa Championship as well as the DSTV Premiership.

He will be joined on the side-lines by another referee, Jelly Chavani, who according to the referees’ committee, denied Orlando Pirates a penalty in another game against Swallows.

Chavani is accused of making a wrong call by showing a yellow card to Fortune Makaringe for simulation.

“The referee, Thokozani Mkhize and second assistant referee, Andile Mncwango, were incorrect to disallow the goal scored by Motebang Sera in the 61st minute. Motebang was not in an offside position. This incorrect decision had a direct impact on the outcome of the match,” the statement by the referees review committee said.

“The review committee has recommended that the second assistant referee Mncwango, not be appointed for games in the PSL or Glad-Africa Championship for a period of 16 weeks. The review committee has also recommended that the referee, Thokozani Mkhize not be appointed for games in the PSL or Glad-Africa for a period of four weeks.”
