MASERU - The dream of playing at the continental stage was shattered yet again when Likuena yesterday narrowly missed qualifying for Champions of African Nations (CHAN) at the hands of the Brave Warriors of Zimbabwe.

Two goals were the only bridge that stood between Lesotho and CHAN. The team needed a clear two-nil win to book itself a ticket to Cameroon next year.

But it was not meant to be, because the Thabo Senong-led troop played a zero all draw in front of a sparsely packed Setsoto Stadium. Earlier in March, Likuena failed to live up to expectations when they were held to a goalless draw by a less aggressive Cape Verde.  Moerane Sekhoane was dropped in favour of Thabiso Lichaba in between the posts even though he praised the youngster on his debut match and cap in the first leg.

From the get go, the boys showed bravery when going forward and their real chance came from Thabo Seakhoa. He dribbled his way past the visitors’ defense but failed to make a fruitful shot as it was way off the mark. The visiting coach later admitted that his opponents were more aggressive, unlike in the past when they met.

“We knew they would come at us, which they did. We cannot play away and play an open game,” he later said in a post-match interview. Likuena’s next mission is to qualify for the next edition of AFCON scheduled for 2021.
