MASERU - When the general public adheres to lockdown guidelines set by the declaration of Coronavirus (COVID-19) statement of Emergency Notice, 2020 by staying at home and minimising movement, some criminal elements take the advantage to commit crimes.

According to a media statement issued by National Emergency Command Centre (NECC) on Tuesday, two armed robberies occurred this week at the Puma Filing Station and ’Melesi Off-sales both located in Borokhoaneng, Maseru.

Property including cigarettes, energy drinks and cash worth M6 000 was stolen during the two incidents.

The statement shows that no one was injured at the Puma Filing Station, while a security officer was shot and injured at the ’Melesi Off-sales by the suspects.

According to the police spokesperson Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli, 16 cases of stock theft were recorded countrywide during this period of lockdown in which among others 359 sheep and 25 cattle were stolen.

He said most of the stolen animals were seized at gun point and taken to South Africa.

“However, 150 sheep have since been recovered,” Mopeli also said.
