MASERU – A Setibeng woman who allegedly tried to force her 15-year-old granddaughter into early marriage to an older male villager was last week remanded in custody by the Maseru Magistrate’s Court.

The 62-year-old woman and her 30-year-old compatriot were each granted a M700 bail, which they both failed to pay. According to police deputy spokesperson, Sergeant ’Mareabetsoe Mofoka, the old woman wanted to marry the girl off to the man.

Sgt Mofoka said the grandmother sent the victim to a nearby forest to fetch some firewood so that the man could abduct her.

After her abduction, the girl was taken to the man’s home where she, however, made it clear that she did not want to be his wife. Sgt Mofoka said the girl was eventually rescued by other villagers who reported the incident to area headman, leading to the suspects’ apprehension.
