The new deputy leader of the ruling All Basotho Convention (ABC) Professor Nqosa Mahao was earlier today expelled from the party. Mahao who confirmed his sacking said the letter was delivered at his home by Motseki Lefera around 7am.

Lefera is one of the applicants who wanted the party’s February elections and the elective conference to be declared null and void by the High Court. Mahao said he was not planning to do anything about his expulsion. “I am not going to take any action, firstly because I only received a ‘show cause why’ letter on Thursday and the three days which were a period I was given to respond has not lapsed so it is a bit premature for the expulsion letter. I still have until Tuesday to respond’, Mahao said.

He said secondly, assuming he had responded to the ‘show cause why’ letter, party leader Thomas Thabane would not have known or seen his response because he had not been at the office since Friday. So according to him, it would also be premature for the second letter, even if he had responded. Thirdly, he said there is no clause in the ABC constitution that allows the leader to expel any member. “The constitution only limits the leader to suspend a member but not expel them, hence the letter is not in line with it,” he said. Asked to comment on the matter, former party general secretary Samonyane Ntsekele who allegedly wrote the letter said he was not in a position as he was just an ordinary party member.
