MASERU – Prime Minister Motsoahae Thabane has announced his intention to step down, citing reasons of old age and fatigue.

The 80-year old Thabane told a press conference on Monday that while his successor was yet to be named, he would leave office as soon all essential steps had been taken to ensure a smooth transition.

He said he had already communicated his plans with his Majesty King Letsie III along with all stakeholders in government and within his ruling All Basotho Convention (ABC).

“I will always be available to give advice where it is needed, I therefore urge all stakeholders to offer a hand towards a peaceful Lesotho,” he appealed.

Thabane is stepping down in the midst of an ongoing investigation in which police have mounted a manhunt for his elusive wife ’Maesaiah who is wanted for the murder of Thabane’s other wife, Lipolelo.

’Maesaiah is believed to have skipped the country after she was requested to report herself at the police headquarters in connection with Lipolelo’s murder.

Lipolelo was allegedly shot dead in June 2017 - two days before Thabane’s inauguration. The fatal shooting occurred at the gate of her Ha ’Masana residence on the outskirts of Maseru.
