The upgrading of the Bambatha Ts'ita Sports Arena has kicked off with the first phase including the paving of the surroundings of the facility. The sports arena serves as the football headquarters in Lesotho and its upgrading is being funded by the FIFA’s Forward Project financial assistance.

The Lesotho Football Association communications officer Mikia Kalati said the revamping of the sport facility will be carried out in different phases. Kalati said the renovation will include the furnishing of the playing field with an artificial turf in order to among others accommodate Premier League teams which do not have appropriate venues for their respective home matches. Another phase, he said will comprise a sitting area, dormitories, conference halls and a kitchen in order to cater for national teams on camp.

The revamped facility, he said, would be used to generate income for LeFA through holding conferences and seminars among others. “All the refurbishments will be accountable to the world football controlling body FIFA, in order to release more funds,” he said. Earlier this year, president of LeFA King’s Counsel Salemane Phafane announced that FIFA had approved the upgrading of sport arena under its FIFA Forward Project.

Mr Phafane had announced that the renovation would commence between May and June. He said there would also be a gymnasium that would be used by national sides on camp. He said the establishment of the gymnasium would help cut down costs of outsourcing training facilities such as the Lehakoe Recreation Centre and South Africa high performance training centres located in both Bloemfontein and Pretoria. Mr Phafane showed that the refurbishment would also include dressing rooms, adding that such a facility shall be a commercial component aimed specifically at generating income for the association. He could, however, not confirm whether or not that part of the facility would be run in-house or by an outside party. He said in order to accommodate teams from the southern region of Lesotho, artificial turf would also be fitted at the Mohale's Hoek sport arena. LeNA
